Lake Michigan

Skamania Steelhead, King Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, and Smallmouth fishing in Michigan

We have been catching a variety of species lately all over the state, Skamania Steelhead, King Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth, and Pike.

Skamania fishing has been good from the piers when the conditions are right and there are more and more trickling into the rivers.  I still have some dates open this Summer for Skamania Steelhead so give me a call if you want to get you butt kicked by some of these insane fish.

I was up in Sault Ste. Marie fishing Atlantic Salmon on the St. Mary's river again this year and we had an awesome time catching a bunch of these high jumping acrobats.  We use a variety of techniques to chase these fish and the Atlantic Salmon are some of the most exciting fish to pursue around. If you are looking to get out and fish the highly prized Atlantic Salmon I will be offering trips for them starting next summer.  If you want to book a couple of days I will offer a discounted rate.  They are well worth the trip up to the UP!

King Salmon Fishing has picked up on Lake Michigan.  The water has started setting up finally making the Kings a little more predictable and easier to target.  Meat rigs have been the best bait for King Salmon while bright colored spoons have taken most of the Steelhead.

Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass fishing has been good with the hot weather setting in.  The Muskegon River and Grand River should have some good Smallmouth action for the rest of the summer.  Although my favorites are the cold water species the Smallmouth Bass are close behind.  Top water baits, crank baits, tubes, craws, whatever, they are an aggressive fish.  The Largemouth Bass and Norther Pike have been on the bite as well in the inland lakes and on slower sections of the rivers.  Tubes, crank baits, and top waters will catch the pike and bucket mouths.

I will be starting my river trips for King Salmon in late August on the Pere Marquette and Big Manistee rivers.  I will be offering morning and afternoon crank bait and skein fishing trips for these river monsters.  The numbers on the lake seem a little better than last year and the size is up as well.  The fish are fat and healthy so they should be a real handful when they show up in the rivers.  I will be back and forth between the PM and the Big Manistee depending on where the fishing is best at the time.  Later in September I will be offering trips on the Muskegon and Grand Rivers as well as they start to fill in with fish.  If you have a date in mind let me know so I can get you in the books before the dates fill in.

Grand River, Muskegon River, Lake Michigan, West Michigan Fishing Reports

It is hard to believe but July is already here and we are well into our Summer fishing.  There are lots of opportunities out there right now.  We have Smallmouth Bass and Trout fishing on the Muskegon River, Smallmouth Bass, Pike, Catfish, etc. on the Grand River.  The Skamania are hitting off from the piers and a few are filtering into the rivers.  There are some good sized King Salmon showing up in our catches on Lake Michigan along with Steelhead, Lake Trout, and the odd Coho and Brown Trout.  There seems to be a good amount of bait fish around this year in the lake and the Kings that are out there seem to be bulking up after the long Winter/Spring we had.  We are seeing good Kings over here but a lot of the larger 20 to 25 lb fish that I have heard about are still over in Wisconsin waters, some of those fish should start making there way over here as the summer goes on and the urge to head into their natal rivers kicks in.

If you are looking to get out this Summer I will be offering Summer Run Steelhead fishing trips in the rivers over the next couple of months.  Skamania or Summer Run Steelhead are insane when you hook into them, they are one of the wildest fish around when hooked.  These fish can be caught using a variety of methods such as float fishing, drift fishing, fly fishing, casting hardware, plugging, etc..

Skamania Steelhead Fishing

I will be up on the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie fishing for Atlantic Salmon later in July and have a couple days open for that if you want to get out and catch some of these magnificent fish.  When hooked Atlantics are usually in the air showing off how high they can jump followed by long fast runs that will surely have your blood pumping.  These fish are one of the most prized game fish in the world and we have them right here in Michigan.  Float fishing, casting, fly fishing, and drift fishing are the most popular ways to fish for Atlantic Salmon.

St. Mary's River Atlantic Salmon

If you are looking to get out and catch some Smallmouth Bass we have a number of different trips for those.  The Muskegon River, Grand River, Thornapple River, Flat River, Rogue River, etc..  Some of the Smaller rivers I offer Kayak and Wade trips on if you are looking for a combo Kayak/Fishing Trip.  There is some excellent fishing on some of these smaller waters.

Lake Michigan fishing is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon with with family.  There are some good sized Kings out there this year and as the lake sets up over the next few weeks we should see some better fishing for those as well as Steelhead, Trout, and Coho.

Lake Michigan King Salmon Fishing

Starting in late August thru October we will be chasing King Salmon in the rivers.  I will be up on the Pere Marquette and Big Manistee throwing crankbaits, fishing bobbers and skein, as well as some other techniques.  Later in the Salmon run I usually head south as the fresher fish enter the Muskegon and Grand River.  These fish are sure to get your heart racing when you hook into one of these river monsters.  If you are looking for a combo King Salmon and Steelhead fishing trip mid October is a great time for that.

Smallmouth Bass, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, King Salmon Michigan Fishing Report

Fishing has been good lately for a lot of species depending on where you go.  We have been catching Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, and Smallmouth on the Muskegon River.  If you are looking to get out and throw some hardware on the Muskegon now is a good time to book a trip for that.  The Grand River and its tributaries have been fishing well for Smallmouth, Catfish, and a bunch of other species.  The Smallmouth Bass fishing should be heating up good as the river drops and warms up over the next few weeks.  We should have some good fishing all summer long if you are looking to get out and have a fun day floating down the river and catching these aggressive Smallies. Lake Michigan has been good to slow depending on the day for King Salmon, Lake Trout, and Steelhead.    Inland lake fishing has been good for Bluegills and Largemouth Bass.  Skamania Steelhead fishing is not too far off so give me a call if you would like to book a trip on the pier or on the rivers for them.  They are some of the best fighting fish of the year.

Give me a call if you are looking to get out this summer, I will be working on Lake Michigan as well as the rivers and inland lakes.  If you are looking to book a trip this September or October for King Salmon on the Big Manistee, Pere Marquette, or Muskegon Rivers get a hold of me ASAP so I can get your date written in.  I will be starting my fall river trips that last week of August.

Pere Marquette and Big Manistee River Salmon Fishing is near.

We are just past the halfway mark in August and a few King Salmon have been entering rivers such as the Betsie, Pere Marquette, Little Manistee, and Big Manistee.  A couple buddies and I did a scouting trip on the 13th on the PM and did not see much, there were a few fish flopping out in the lake but very few signs of life in the river.  Besides a few quick tugs on our crankbaits we never hooked a Salmon that day.  Over the past few days the water on the lake shore of Lake Michigan has been pretty cold so I would imagine a few more fish have slid in up there.

The Skamania fishing has been decent on the lake shore and in some of the rivers.  I was out on a river yesterday for a few hours and we got into a few.

The fishing has been decent around the Muskegon pier heads for King Salmon.  Plugs such as Tomics, J-Plugs, and Silver Hordes have been working well when trolling.

The Smallmouth Bass bite has been good on the Muskegon River and Grand River lately.

I still have a few dates in September open as well as some dates in October and November.  These are some prime time dates and should offer some great fishing for Salmon and Steelhead.

Lake Michigan King Salmon and Steelhead and Muskegon River Smallmouth Bass action.

Fishing for King Salmon and Steelhead out of Muskegon has been picking up.  The Steelhead this year seem to be a few pounds above average size, there seems to be lots of those 9 to 12 lb fish out there.  As for the Kings we have been seeing a lot of the 4 to 8lb fish but the big ones seem to be just starting to show back up.  Right now is a good time to get out and get into a mix bag of Kings, Steelhead, Lake Trout, and Coho Salmon.

Fishing for Smallmouth Bass on the Muskegon River has been good.  We have been getting a lot of the smaller 12 to 13 inch sized bass with a few larger ones thrown in about every time out.  Most of the Brown and Rainbow trout have been running on the smaller side with lots of 8 to 9 inchers with a 14 incher thrown in here and there.

Skamania river fishing has been really slow this year for river and pier fishing.  They just do not seem to want to come in yet this year.  This will change it is just a matter of when.

King Salmon River Fishing is just around the corner.  Give me a call to get in on some early Kings on the Pere Marquette or Big Manistee throwing crank baits and skein.  There have been some fish over 20lbs showing up lately on the lake so hopefully we will have another good year for King Salmon over 20lbs on the river.  The Steelhead on Lake Michigan have been running on the large size, I cannot wait to see what size they are come this fall.  If you are planning a guided King Salmon or Steelhead trip this fall give me a call so I can get you in my book before most of the dates are filled.  I still have some dates to fill that first week of September and a few strung out throughout the month as well as some afternoons.  October is a great month for Kings and Steelhead and I still have a decent number of days to fill for that month.  We are usually getting big numbers of Kings and good numbers of Steelhead throughout the month of October.

Lake Michigan King Salmon Fishing

The Salmon and Steelhead fishing on Lake Michigan out of Muskegon has been good.  Most of our fish have been coming up higher in the water column, 3 to 7 colors of lead core, 30, 75, and 150 coppers have been hot.  The spoons that have been seeing the most play are Stingers UV Green Dolphin, Frosted Veggies, UV Mixed Veggie, Orange Crush, and Jaw Breaker.  We have been taking some bigger Kings on our Flasher Fly Combos while fishing them deeper on our low divers and riggers.  The 8 and 11 inch white fish scale paddles with a Big Weenie living the dream fly and a blue and chrome spiny with a blue bubble fly has been our best combos.

We have also been doing some Smallmouth Bass fishing on the Grand River and that has been hit or miss lately.  The water has been running a little high and stained, as the summer goes on and it drops and clears the action will heat up.

The Muskegon River has been fishing well for trout with some bass thrown in as well.

River fishing for King Salmon is not too far off so if you are looking to get out this fall let me know ASAP as my dates are filling in.  I will be offering morning trips and a limited number of afternoon trips as well.  We usually target the King Salmon in the rivers from the end of August into late October.

Lake Michigan Fishing for King Salmon is Hot

King Salmon Fishing out on Lake Michigan has been great.  There are lots of Kings in that 8 to 15lb range biting right now in close out of Muskegon and Grand Haven.  Now is the time to get out and get into good numbers of these feisty fish, it is hard to beat the fight and taste of a Spring King Salmon.  I ran my last Spring Steelhead Trip this past weekend and there were still a decent number of fish around but I would imagine that will be short lived.  I am looking forward to giving the Steelhead fishing a rest for a while while we concentrate on Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, and Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing.  If you want to get out Charter Fishing for King Salmon give me a call, we offer morning and afternoon 5 hour trips.  Otherwise if you would rather stick in shore and fish for Smallmouth Bass, Pike, Catfish, Trout, etc., we can get out on the Muskegon River, Grand River, or some of the inland lakes around the area.

Muskegon King Salmon

King Salmon Fishing has been good on Lake Michigan out of Muskegon Michigan.  The King Salmon are still running good sized with some smaller 1 and 2 year olds mixed in, most of our big Kings have been coming on paddles and flies down 70 to 130 in the water column on our riggers and wire divers, 300,400, and 450 coppers with magnum spoons have been taking their share as well.  Our higher lines have been picking up a few Steelhead, smaller Kings, and Coho Salmon with the small Michigan Stinger spoons doing most of the damage.

Our Pere Marquette River and Big Manistee River King Salmon Crankbait and Skein Fishing trips start up in just over 2 months.  I am looking forward to seeing some big King Salmon again this year on the river.  By the looks of things on the lake the Kings should be a couple pounds heavier on average over last years fish.  Give me a call if you are looking to get out and enjoy some of the most exciting fresh water fishing available.
