Michigan Steelhead Fishing

1/17/12 Steelhead fishing here in Michigan has been going great for the month of January.  Most of the rivers on the west side of Michigan have been putting out good numbers.  The Pere Marquette River, Grand River, and Muskegon River have been fishing well for us lately, we have been catching lots of big fish.  Float Fishing has been our method of choice but we have been taking Steelhead on a number of different techniques.  The weather is going to cool down for a few days but then it looks like it is going to be back up in the high 30s to 40s again.  Give us a call to get out this winter, we still have lots of open Steelhead dates in January, February, and March.  Below is a sampling of the fish that we have been catching lately.

Michigan Steelhead Fishing has been FANTASTIC!

1/12/12  I have had some free time to fish myself this week and the fishing has been great, we are seeing lots of bigger than average sized fish.  The Muskegon River, Grand River, Kalamazoo River, and Pere Marquette River have all been putting up big numbers of Steelhead.  The warmer weather that we have had has had the Steelhead acting more like it is late November rather than January, lots of good runs and jumps out of these fish.  We have been taking most of our fish while float fishing with spawn and also taking fish on jigs in the clearer watered rivers.  Most of the rivers around the state have a good crop of fish so the winter fishing should continue to be great.  Give us a call and book a winter trip, the scenery is beautiful and we have the rivers to ourselves.  Below are a few of the many Steelhead that have seen my net over the past few days.

West Michigan Steelhead

1/9/12 Steelhead fishing has been great around West Michigan for 2012!  The Muskegon River, Grand River, Rogue River, and just about any other river on the west side of Michigan has been treating us well.  There seems to still be a decent number of fresh fishing showing up to mix in with the darker fish.  With the crystal clear waters of some of the rivers that we have been fishing it has paid off running the lighter leaders while float fishing and swithing to jigs and bugs on occasion.  Give us a call and get in on the action!

Pere Marquette River Steelhead Fishing

12/22/11 Steelhead Fishing has been great around West Michigan, today we were on the Pere Marquette River and the bite was hot.  Centerpin Float fishing with eggs and jigs kept the rods bent all day long.  We have been catching some really nice sized fish lately and today was no exception.  It looks like the weather is going to stay decent for the extended forecast and the fishing should be great into well Spring.  Below are a few pics from today.

Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishing is Here!

10/1/11 Well October is here and so are the Steelhead.  We have been putting good numbers of King Salmon into the boat most days float fishing skein and while fishing with crankbaits and hooking many more.  We are starting to see more Steelhead around as well and hooking into them here and there while targeting Salmon.  If you are looking to get out and search for some early chrome Steelhead give me a call as we have some openings from the 10th thru the 13th of October.  Below are a few sample pictures of what we have been catching over the past few days.

Michigan Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead aka Lake Run Rainbow Trout usually start to show up in fishable numbers in West Michigan rivers by early October, we start our guided trips for steelhead around the 10th. The October steelhead are my favorite, they are in top condition and show so by providing many jumps and long line burning runs. Usually by November the steelhead fishing is going strong in the Grand, Muskegon, and Big Manistee and big number days can be had most days.

Winter is a great time to get out on a charter and get into Steelhead as well on rivers such as the Grand River, the Muskegon River, and the Big Manistee. There are usually less anglers on the water and the fish will congregate into the deeper slower water making them very predictable. We supply a heater for the boat during the winter months to keep you comfortable in-between fighting fish. Any warm up or melt off in January, February, or March will usually bring in new Spring fish here in Michigan, depending on how many come in, it can be really hot fishing. The spring fishing usually gets going good on the Grand River sometime in February and the Muskegon River is a little bit later into March, depending on the weather and river the Spring peak can be in late March or sometime in April.

Although we usually float fish for steelhead with Centerpin or spinning rods and reels we also use the methods of dropping back or trolling plugs, back bouncing eggs, and flyfishing.

We mainly fish the Grand River, Muskegon River, Pere Marquette River, and the Big Manistee River for Steelhead but also offer drift boat and walk in trips on some of the smaller waters such as the White, Rogue, and other area tributaries.
