Michigan Steelhead Fishing

We have been doing good over the past few weeks on our Steelhead guide trips on the Grand River and Muskegon River.  I have heard good reports from the Pere Marquette River, Kalamazoo River, and Big Manistee as well from friends.  The Steelhead have been full of piss and vinegar lately and we have caught them while Plug Fishing, Float Fishing, Bottom Bouncing, etc..  Guys wading in at 6th street dam in Grand Rapids have been catching fresh fish daily and the upper river from the sounds of it has been good from the fish that have been passing through.  I have a few dates open later in November as well as a good number of dates throughout December if you are looking to get out.  I do start my Winter Steelhead Guide rates as of December 10th for the Muskegon River and Grand River and the fishing is usually pretty good throughout the Winter months.  If you are looking to book a Spring Steelhead fishing trip this year get with me ASAP so you can get the date that you prefer.

Here are a few Steelhead pictures from lately.

Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River and Grand River has been decent to good for us over the past couple of weeks on my guide trips.  King Salmon are still around with some chrome ones still entering the rivers but we are pretty much done targeting them at this point.  The Muskegon could use a little more water as it is running pretty low and clear, the Grand River has been running on the high side this fall so far.  They are catching a few steelhead from the sounds of it down at 6th street dam in Grand Rapids and up near Croton Dam near Newaygo wading in.  Give me a call if you would like to get out this fall or winter for some guided steelheading, I still have a few prime November dates as well as some great dates in December.  We offer Spinning, Baitcasting, or Centerpins for float fishing.  We use a variety of techniques and encourage newbies to the sport to come out.

Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing

It feels good to be fishing for Steelhead instead of King Salmon after a month and a half of daily Salmon guide trips.  There are still numbers of King Salmon around but the amount of biters has dwindled.  Over the past week and a half rivers such as the Grand River, Muskegon River, and Pere Marquette River have received a few more Steelhead and with the rain forecasted for tomorrow the 14th we should see a good push of Steelhead in all of the West Michigan rivers.  The brown trout have been biting good as well with the eggs flying around.  We have been mainly float fishing lately but we have taken a few fish plugging and bottom bouncing as well.  Give me a call if you want to get out, I still have a couple of days in October, November, and December open.  It is never too early to book your Winter or Spring Steelheading trips either.

Michigan King Salmon and Steelhead Fishing

The King Salmon run has been a slow trickle of fish in most of the rivers.  We have been on the Muskegon River, Pere Marquette River, Big Manistee, and Grand River over the past couple of weeks and the number of Salmon around has been lower than years past.  We have been landing fish everyday but working a little harder for them.  The good news is that there are Steelhead starting to show up and we have found a few of them lately to play with.  I will probably fish Kings for another couple weeks and then switch over to Steelhead fishing unless someone wants to do a late King Salmon trip later in October.  I still have a few dates left in October, November, and December for Steelhead Fishing.  The ones that I have seen this year all look very healthy in size.  If you want to get out this fall and enjoy a day of Steelhead fishing on one of our West Michigan Rivers give me a call.

Pere Marquette River, Big Manistee River, Muskegon River, Grand River Salmon and Steelhead Fishing

Sorry for the lack of Salmon fishing reports but I have been busy on the rivers.  King Salmon fishing on the Pere Marquette, Big Manistee, Muskegon, and Grand had a slow start but are starting to pick up.  We have been catching a mix of darker fish and fresher fish everyday now.  The numbers of Salmon entering the rivers this year are down from years past but hopefully that means that there are a lot to come yet.  We boated our first fall run Steelhead of year today, that was a pleasant surprise after seeing nothing but Salmon lately.  I will be fishing Kings for a few more weeks and then will be doing Steelhead if anyone is looking to get out for those.  I have a few October dates left and some great November and December dates left for Steelhead.  I heard that the Grand River got a good push of Coho with some Kings, Steelhead, and Brown Trout mixed in.  The Muskegon River has a few Kings running around but the fishing has been spotty from what I have heard.  Get with me if you are looking to take a trip this fall or winter for Steelhead as we should see some good sized fish this year again.

Here are a few pics from the past few weeks.  I will get more up when I get some more free time.

Pere Marquette River King Salmon Fishing

The Pere Marquette has a few King Salmon running around, not many as of today August the 27th but a few to play with.  We boated a couple of King Salmon today and lost a few more.  The few boats that we talked to sounded like they had zero to 3 hook ups but none had one to the boat so we are still waiting on a good push of fish in there.  With the rain and cooler weather hopefully this will happen over the next few days.  Yesterday I fished a Southwest Michigan river for Skamania and Smallmouth and we did decent landing some nice fish Centerpinning and tossing crankbaits.  I will be up north running around on the Pere Marquette River and Big Manistee River for the next month or more for King Salmon, then I will probably start fishing a few other rivers such as the Muskegon River when good numbers show up.  I still have some great dates in October for King Salmon and Steelhead as well as some 4 hour afternoons in September.  I have a couple other guides that I work with and I might have a cancelation here and there as well so give me a call if you have a day that you have in mind.   Crankbait and float fishing for Kings is some of the most exciting fishing of the year so don't miss out!

Pere Marquette and Big Manistee River Salmon Fishing is near.

We are just past the halfway mark in August and a few King Salmon have been entering rivers such as the Betsie, Pere Marquette, Little Manistee, and Big Manistee.  A couple buddies and I did a scouting trip on the 13th on the PM and did not see much, there were a few fish flopping out in the lake but very few signs of life in the river.  Besides a few quick tugs on our crankbaits we never hooked a Salmon that day.  Over the past few days the water on the lake shore of Lake Michigan has been pretty cold so I would imagine a few more fish have slid in up there.

The Skamania fishing has been decent on the lake shore and in some of the rivers.  I was out on a river yesterday for a few hours and we got into a few.

The fishing has been decent around the Muskegon pier heads for King Salmon.  Plugs such as Tomics, J-Plugs, and Silver Hordes have been working well when trolling.

The Smallmouth Bass bite has been good on the Muskegon River and Grand River lately.

I still have a few dates in September open as well as some dates in October and November.  These are some prime time dates and should offer some great fishing for Salmon and Steelhead.

Pere Marquette River and Big Manistee River King Salmon Coming Soon! Lake Michigan King Salmon heating up!

Now that we are into August my King Salmon guided trips on the Pere Marquette River and Big Manistee River are less than a month away.  If you are looking to get out on a guided King trip get with me as soon as possible, I still have some late August, September, and October dates available.  October is a great month for big numbers of both King Salmon and Steelhead so if you would like to try your hands at both that is the time.  We offer the use of centerpin, spinning, or bait casting equipment and cater to all ages and skill levels.  If you have not done the King Salmon Crankbait fishing you have to try it.

The Skamania Steelhead have been around the piers lately and with the colder river temps some of them have been flying up the rivers as well.  If you are into Skamania fishing contact the MDNR and ask them to start planting these in more of our Michigan rivers, maybe if they receive enough emails they will realize how popular this fish has become.

Smallmouth Bass action has been good on the Muskegon River, Grand River, and the Flat River.  Tubes, Senkos, Crankbaits, or live bait has been working good.

The King Salmon fishing out of the port of Muskegon has picked up.  It was a tuff go for Kings over the past month but the past couple of days have been good, hopefully they stick around for the rest of the month.  Steelhead fishing has been great out on the lake trolling, we have found some real hogs this summer.

Lake Michigan King Salmon and Steelhead and Muskegon River Smallmouth Bass action.

Fishing for King Salmon and Steelhead out of Muskegon has been picking up.  The Steelhead this year seem to be a few pounds above average size, there seems to be lots of those 9 to 12 lb fish out there.  As for the Kings we have been seeing a lot of the 4 to 8lb fish but the big ones seem to be just starting to show back up.  Right now is a good time to get out and get into a mix bag of Kings, Steelhead, Lake Trout, and Coho Salmon.

Fishing for Smallmouth Bass on the Muskegon River has been good.  We have been getting a lot of the smaller 12 to 13 inch sized bass with a few larger ones thrown in about every time out.  Most of the Brown and Rainbow trout have been running on the smaller side with lots of 8 to 9 inchers with a 14 incher thrown in here and there.

Skamania river fishing has been really slow this year for river and pier fishing.  They just do not seem to want to come in yet this year.  This will change it is just a matter of when.

King Salmon River Fishing is just around the corner.  Give me a call to get in on some early Kings on the Pere Marquette or Big Manistee throwing crank baits and skein.  There have been some fish over 20lbs showing up lately on the lake so hopefully we will have another good year for King Salmon over 20lbs on the river.  The Steelhead on Lake Michigan have been running on the large size, I cannot wait to see what size they are come this fall.  If you are planning a guided King Salmon or Steelhead trip this fall give me a call so I can get you in my book before most of the dates are filled.  I still have some dates to fill that first week of September and a few strung out throughout the month as well as some afternoons.  October is a great month for Kings and Steelhead and I still have a decent number of days to fill for that month.  We are usually getting big numbers of Kings and good numbers of Steelhead throughout the month of October.

West Michigan Summer Fishing

Salmon Fishing out on Lake Michigan has been hit or miss lately, it is good one day and slow the next.  July should bring some more consistant action for King Salmon as the Lake sets up.  We have been finding some really nice Steelhead out on the lake trolling, there seems to be a good crop of 10 to 14lb steelhead swimming around out there with some larger ones being caught as well.

I have also been out on the rivers here and there and we have been catching a good mix of species.  The Muskegon river has been producing good numbers of trout with a few smallmouth and walleye mixed in as well.  The Grand RIver has been high and stained from the recent rains but was giving up some decent action for Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, etc..  Smallmouth Bass fishing should really start heating up on both the Muskegon and Grand Rivers over the next few weeks.  The Skamania Steelhead fishing on the piers as well as in the rivers has been off to a really slow start this year.

Pere Marquette River King Salmon Fishing

Just a reminder, if you are looking to get out this September or October for King Salmon fishing on the rivers let me know as soon as you get some dates together as I have filled about half of my dates already.  I still have a few weekend dates open for those that cannot do a mid week trip.  I will be offering some afternoon/evening trips as well in September/October for those that would rather sleep in and fish later in the day.  The afternoon trips will be 4 hours and they will start between 2 and 4pm.  I will begin doing trips on the river towards the end of August for those of you looking to get out and cast some crankbaits for these chrome river beasts.
